"With increased ground clearance and tires that offered at least a semblance of off-road grip as well as some on-road performance, street/ trail motorcycles gave many riders their first taste of mechanized freedom, first in the dirt, and then on the street." - Motorcycle Classics.
North America's wide-open spaces are the perfect playground for off-road motorcycles, and the importance of this leisure-orientated sector has long been recognised by European and Japanese manufacturers. Yamaha began contesting this market in the early 1960s, offering a range of single-cylinder two-stroke trail bikes and purpose-built moto-crossers as well as twin-cylinder 'street scramblers'. Introduced in the late 1960s, the CT175 trail bike was sold mainly in the USA, which is where this example originated. At 15. 6bhp its maximum power output was relatively modest, though as the CT175 weighed only 97kg (213lb) it was still pretty lively off-road. The model was renamed DT175 in 1974.
Imported from the USA and first registered in the UK in June 2017, the Yamaha was purchased by the private vendor in 2020. The machine is believed to be largely original, having had only minor restoration carried out by a previous owner. Part of a small private collection, it has been dry stored and started regularly, and should require minimal recommissioning before returning to the road. The machine is offered with a VJMCC dating certificate; rider's manual; owner's manual; period sales brochure ; and a V5C Registration Certificate. The current odometer reading is 7, 784 miles.
£1, 500 - 2, 500
All lots are sold ‘as is/ where is’ and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
