Introduced in the early 1930s, the Mercedes-Benz W21 220 embodied the company’s commitment to refined engineering and understated elegance. Built between 1933 and 1936 as the successor to the W02, it offered a perfect balance of luxury and mechanical sophistication, appealing to a clientele that valued quality over ostentation.

This particular example, first registered in 1935, is one of the desirable long wheelbase versions introduced from 1934. Under the bonnet lies Mercedes’ smooth 6-cylinder 2, 089 cc engine, producing around 40 horsepower — enough to deliver composed, effortless performance that made the model a favourite among discerning drivers of the period. The side-opening bonnet panels and detailed coachwork speak to a time when craftsmanship and design were inseparable.

Originally registered in Switzerland, the car still retains its Swiss papers, with all EU taxes now paid. More recently, it was part of the private collection of a London-based enthusiast known for his focus on classic Mercedes-Benz models. Under his ownership, the car underwent a careful restoration, beginning from a solid and well-preserved base. The body was refinished in a period-correct colour, complemented by a completely re-trimmed interior executed to a high standard. Mechanically, everything was inspected and overhauled where needed, resulting in a car that drives as confidently as it presents.

On the road, the W21 feels remarkably composed for its age. The long wheelbase adds stability, while the six-cylinder engine delivers smooth, consistent power. Its handling remains tight and reassuring, a testament to the original engineering and the quality of the recent work.

Visually, the car has a quiet sophistication that draws the eye without shouting for attention. The graceful proportions, upright grille, and fine detailing all contribute to its timeless character. Inside, the newly finished cabin captures the spirit of pre-war motoring with warmth and authenticity.

The W21 was always aimed at the upper segment of the market, and nearly a century later, it still carries that sense of prestige. This example, beautifully restored and well cared for, is more than just a classic Mercedes — it’s a reflection of an era when craftsmanship, engineering, and elegance were perfectly aligned.
