Vehicle Story:
This rare short-wheelbase 88 inch Series-1 model type, was launched in summer 1956 with a two-litre petrol engine. The 88-Inch had its front axle moved forward to facilitate a diesel variant in 1957 due to the Suez Oil Crisis. Sharing its chassis sequence with the 86-Inch, exact production numbers are unclear, but only around 1, 000 of these “Station Wagons” were manufactured, making this a rare model indeed. It started life with the NZ Cable-Price Corporation
Before being restored by the Land Rover Enthusiasts Club in Rotorua. It was then used in NZ habitat conservation. Then, it was imported to the UK and put in storage until recent registration, holding an age appropriate registration 457XWG.
Vehicle Overview
The bodywork is excellent, with a new chassis, new rust-protected black bulkhead, and minor patina weathering above the windscreen. All five SUMO tires, including the bonnet-mounted spare, are in good shape. The side panels display stickers and decals of the restoration and forestry conservation work in New Zealand.
The cab is original, featuring three front spade seats in great condition. The rear is ready to attach fold-down seats as an option.
The interior is well-preserved and no cuts or dents in the tub floor.
This 1957 Station Wagon is remarkably original, and its 4-cylinder petrol engine is in good condition, and has a new battery.
