In December 1919 the newly created Rolls-Royce of America Incorporated purchased the American Wire Wheel Company's plant in Springfield, Massachusetts, from which the first US-built Silver Ghost emerged in January 1921. Unlike its British-built counterpart, the American 'Ghost could be ordered with 'factory' bodywork, usually by Brewster, the latter company being taken over by Rolls-Royce in December 1925. Right-hand drive remained the norm for US-built cars until early in 1925, the penultimate year of Silver Ghost production, when the switch was made to left-hand drive. The model was replaced by the New Phantom (retrospectively Phantom I) in 1926.
Prior to its acquisition of Brewster, Rolls-Royce of America Inc had set up the Rolls-Royce Custom Coach Works (RRCCW) program to organise the supply of 'factory' bodywork, commencing with the Silver Ghost and continuing on its New Phantom successor. Various established coachbuilders supplied bodies badged as 'RRCCW', including Massachusetts-based Merrimac, whose sporting Piccadilly Roadster was deservedly popular, some 70 being completed.
Retaining its original Piccadilly coachwork, this Springfield Silver Ghost was delivered new on 18th September 1923 to Mr Charles E F Clarke of 40 Wall Street. New York City. The car is finished in Old English White with beige leather interior, and is an early Springfield Ghost with right-hand drive and the four-speed gearbox (the model was only delivered in this configuration for the first two years). The car is believed to have been owned at one time by the well-known Campbell family in the USA. The current owner purchased the Rolls-Royce from S. Prestley Blake in the spring of year 2000 and it has been in their family's possession ever since.
The 'Ghost is an older restoration believed carried out in the 1970s-1980s. Around 2005 the engine underwent a comprehensive overhaul by renowned Rolls-Royce expert in Sweden, Kjell Lind, who has been helping the current owners with starting and running the car in recent years. The Ghost is today described as in good original condition. It is currently registered in Sweden and comes with Swedish registration documents, a folder of invoices, copies of the first US title, and other historic documents. As one would expect, this car is mentioned in the book Rolls Royce in America by John Webb de Campi.
