At the first International Motor Show in Frankfurt in April 1951, Daimler-Benz presented the 220 and 300 passenger car models. Both featured completely newly designed six-cylinder engines with overhead camshafts.
Apart from its 2. 2-liter engine with 80 hp, the Type 220 was largely based on the Type 170 S. The chassis and body were almost identical, but the headlights were now integrated into the front fenders, which had been modified for this purpose.
Like the 170 S, the 220, whose series production started in July 1951, was also offered in three body variants – sedan, cabriolet A and cabriolet B.
Corresponding to the significantly higher engine power, the 220 was equipped with duplex brakes on the front wheels.
From December 1953 onwards – due to “repeated pressure from individual prominent figures”, as stated in a circular from the sales management – there was another body variant: a coupé, which became the most exclusive version of the Type 220 in terms of its sales price and number of units produced.
Technically and stylistically, the coupé was based on the Cabriolet A; production of the 220 sedan ended in May 1954. The coupé and cabriolet continued to be built until July and August 1955, respectively.
According to the available commission book extract, our car was delivered to the Mercedes importer for Holland “Firma Agam” on June 2, 1954.
The 220 ran for a long time in the Netherlands and came back to Germany in the late 80s / early 90s.
The coupé was also completely restored to a very high standard at this time.
The Mercedes was re-registered in 1992. Initially, it was driven in Memmingen for a few years, and later in Nuremberg.
The most recent owner acquired the rare Mercedes in 2002 and added it to his collection.
The car also includes an original, three-piece set of luggage by Baisch, which was specially made for the 220 Coupe.
