The 1975 Fritz B. Busch DieselStar record car
With this car, the world speed record in the diesel car class up to 3 liters was achieved.
In 1975, there was a man who decided to demonstrate the power of a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine in a special way. Fritz B. Busch was a 52-year-old journalist known in Germany for his activities in the world of motorsport.
In his workshop at his castle in Wolfegg, he built a world record car together with a number of engineers, based on the chassis of a Formula 2 race car. To boost the standard 79 hp five-cylinder engine of the Mercedes-Benz W115 240D 3. 0 to top performance, an AiResearch turbocharger and a stronger Bosch injection system were installed, and the cylinder capacity was increased to exactly the maximum permitted 3 liters. The engine produced 187 hp. The five-cylinder engine was installed as a mid-engine in the chassis, and around it, the Busch team constructed an angular body from aluminum panels. Its low profile prevented lift and instability of the record-breaking car. He named the project the ‘Dieselstar’.
For his record attempt, he chose the Volkswagen test track in Ehra-Lessien. On November 16, 1975, the moment arrived, and Fritz Busch was allowed to accelerate his Dieselstar from a standstill to top speed. It took exactly 5. 6 seconds for him to reach 100 km/ h. And it didn't stop there, as his top speed turned out to be 253. 7 km/ h. This meant that, in the internationally recognized class for diesel engines, he had driven exactly 136. 1 km/ h over a distance of one kilometer from a standstill. With this, the previous record of 113. 4 km/ h was broken, and the former journalist had secured a place on the list of world record holders. Insiders expressed their surprise that the record was set on a circuit requiring braking and steering, as opposed to the long straight track customary for such record attempts.
