V8 Vantage Zagato - Brief model details:
At the 1984 international motor show at Geneva, Aston Martin re-kindled a long-standing relationship with Italian design house and coach builders Zagato (Est. 1919), to collaborate and to produce, a new limited production extreme performance derivative of the legendary AMV8 Vantage. At the time the most powerful model of the AMV8 range, which had been previously hailed by the motoring press, as ‘Britain’s first supercar’.
12 months later, the first prototype example was presented to the public in 1985 again at Geneva Motor Show. Built on the existing Vantage platform, the Zagato bodied ‘X- pack’ engine equipped Vantage Zagato, is a triumph of form meeting function, offering a overall weight reduction of 10%, a reduced frontal area and drag co-efficient, functioning NACA duct induction and underfloor aerodynamics, a reduced overall length and body incorporating flush fitting glass, collectively the time honoured Zagato philosophy of reducing weight and designing slippery bodies, had produced dramatic improvements to every aspect of dynamic performance, including acceleration, braking, road holding and handling, while providing a top speed, independantly recorded on closed roads, of 186 mph.
Launched with the most powerful V8 engine option, the ‘X-pack’ specification V8 engine, as fitted to this Zagato, produced a healthy 432 bhp in part by way of the improved induction and exhaust system fitted exclusively to this model. Between 1985 and 1987, the as announced limited production run of 50 cars, 32 of which were completed in RHD, were all manufactured and delivered by the close of 1988.
For production, modified and basic production rolling chassis, were sent to the Zagato manufacturing facility in Arese, nr Milan in Italy, where the chassis and superstructure was completed and bodied with hand formed alloy panels, lightweight composite boot floors and bumpers front and rear and the cars painted to customer specifications, by Zagato’s famed coachbuilders craftsmen. The uniquely designed interiors, fitted with light weight seats were trimmed to customer specifications and the completed car then returned to the AM factory in Newport Pagnell, for final fit out, preparation and eventual handover to their new owners.
Appreciably lighter in weight, with wind tunnel developed lightweight bodies, some 10% more power from the ‘X-pack’ V8 engine and with finely tuned suspension, all Aston Martin’s performance goals had been met and tested as the first production cars were delivered. In 1986 a V8 Vantage Zagato, driven by French motor sports journalist and racer, Jose Rosinski, was timed independently for French magazine ‘Sport Auto’, recording a top speed of 186 mph on a closed Autoroute near Paris. The published results demonstrated the V8 Vantage Zagato to have the highest top speed, of any of AM V8 model, from the 1969-1990 production run.
Production finished in 1988, by when a total of 2 prototypes and 50 production cars had been built.
