This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Supercar Fest 2026 on Saturday the 16th of May, Sywell Aerodrome, Sywell, Northampton, NN6 0BN. The R230 generation Mercedes-Benz SL was launched in 2001 following a lengthy development programme that focused heavily on combining advanced engineering with luxury grand touring capability. Designed as a flagship open-top model, the SL adopted a fully retractable hardtop roof system and a highly sophisticated chassis architecture, giving it both coupé like refinement and convertible usability in a single platform. At launch, it was widely regarded as one of the most advanced roadsters Mercedes had ever produced, with styling defined by clean, sculpted surfaces and a restrained but purposeful stance.
The SL55 AMG arrived shortly after the model’s introduction and immediately established itself as one of the defining performance cars of its era. Powered by AMG’s hand assembled 5. 4-litre supercharged V8 engine, it produced approximately 493bhp and 520lb/ ft of torque, delivered through a 5-speed automatic transmission with AMG Speedshift calibration. Performance was exceptional for a luxury roadster of its size, with 0 to 60mph achieved in sub-5 seconds placing it firmly in early-2000s supercar performance territory, while retaining the comfort and composure expected of a flagship Mercedes.
This example is finished in Obsidian Black with a matching interior and shows 81, 500 miles from new. It has benefitted from recent attention to the known ABC suspension system, which has been refreshed and addressed to ensure correct operation, a key maintenance point on R230 models. It is understood to be accompanied by a good service history file along with original book packs and supporting documentation.
The car presents as a useable and honest example rather than a showpiece, with age-appropriate wear consistent with mileage, but remains fundamentally sound and well cared for. It is currently MOT’d until 5th May 2026 and is offered as a ready to use example of AMG’s flagship roadster.
Inside, the SL retains its characteristic blend of leather, aluminium trim and AMG detailing, with a driver focused layout balanced by long distance comfort. Equipment levels remain strong as expected, with electric seating, climate control and infotainment systems all contributing to its grand touring capability.
Now increasingly recognised as a modern AMG classic, the SL55 offers a compelling combination of performance, presence and usability. At this level, it represents a particularly accessible entry into one of AMG’s most influential performance models, combining supercharged V8 power with everyday usability in a way few modern cars can match.
