Description
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. The Chevrolet Corvette C1 Roadster represents the final and most developed evolution of the first-generation Corvette, a model that had matured significantly since its 1953 introduction. By 1962, Chevrolet had refined both the styling and engineering of the C1, resulting in a car that combined distinctive design with genuine performance credentials, firmly establishing its place amongst contemporary sports cars. The defining upgrade for the 1962 model year was the introduction of the 327ci (5. 4-litre) V8 engine, replacing the earlier 283ci unit. Offered in several states of tune, the most desirable specification was the fuel-injected version producing 360bhp. Equipped with this system (RPO 582), the Corvette delivered performance in excess of 140mph with strong acceleration, placing it firmly in competition with leading European sports cars of the period. Combined with a four-speed manual transmission, this specification is widely regarded as the most engaging and collectible configuration available.
This example is fitted with that highly sought-after fuel-injected engine and retains a specification that places it amongst the most desirable of its type. Finished in Fawn Beige, one of six available colours for 1962, the car presents in a period-correct and well-suited colour combination, further enhanced by factory options including electric windows. The overall presentation reflects both the quality of its restoration and the care it has received in subsequent ownership. The car was the subject of a comprehensive restoration in the United States between 2014 and 2015 whilst in the care of a Florida-based Corvette specialist, who retained ownership for approximately seven years. The quality of this restoration was recognised with a class win at the 2015 Boca Raton Concours, where it achieved first place in the ‘American Coupes and Convertibles’ category. This award offers a clear indication of the standard of workmanship and attention to detail applied during the restoration process.
Acquired by our vendor in 2016, the Corvette has since formed part of a carefully curated private Collection. During this period, it has been maintained by the collection’s in-house mechanic and used sparingly, with a focus on preservation and usability. Shortly after purchase, the car was inspected by Italia Autosport, with a number of minor items addressed to ensure it presented and performed as expected. Further improvements have been made with sympathetic usability in mind. In 2019, the cooling system was modified, replacing the viscous ***, which is understood to have improved running temperatures and general drivability, particularly in modern conditions. These enhancements have been carried out without detracting from the car’s overall character or originality.
The car remains UK-registered and is supplied with a V5C registration document. As the final year of the C1 generation, the 1962 Corvette is widely regarded as the most refined and desirable of the early cars, combining the cleaner styling of the later models with the introduction of the larger, more powerful 327ci engine. In fuel-injected form, examples such as this are particularly rare and sought after.
Presented as a well-restored example with proven concours credentials, sensible improvements and careful ongoing maintenance, this Corvette Roadster is ready for immediate use and represents a compelling opportunity to acquire a desirable fuel-injected C1, suitable for both collection and enjoyment.
