The ultimate six-cylinder derivative of Mercedes-Benz's renowned R107 series, the 300SL was introduced at the September, 1985, Frankfurt Motor Show. Equipped with Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel-injection, its inline SOHC M103 2, 962cc engine developed some 177bhp and 188lb. ft. of torque (outputs sufficient for a reputed 125mph top speed). Sharing the same two-door monocoque bodyshell, all-round independent coil-sprung suspension and power-assisted steering as its V8 brethren, it proved notably more fuel efficient. Fitted with four-speed automatic transmission as standard, it further benefited from improved anti-corrosion treatment and ABS brakes. Only in production between 1985 and 1989, just 13, 443 300SLs are thought to have been despatched worldwide.
The evergreen popularity of R107s means there are always some good ones and some not-so-good ones on the market, but bidders may be assured that this is one of the better ones, having been cherished by the late third owner from 1992 to 2025, and subsequently cared for by his widow. Finished in its original colour of Astral Silver with an Alpaca Grey fabric interior, ‘D614 TRB’ was registered on September 8th, 1986, and sold through B. & K. Thomas, Mercedes-Benz agents of Loughborough, to Data Path Ltd. of Melbourne, Derbyshire, with the second owner another Derbyshire business. Forty years later, it is remarkably well-preserved, having covered only 75, 000 miles.
The SL has a most impressive service record, with 11 service stamps, plus the PDI, issued between 1986 and 1995, when it had covered 60, 728 miles. It had covered 52, 500 miles when it was purchased by our vendor’s late husband in 1992 from Speeds Mercedes-Benz of Chesterfield, and is supplied with almost every MOT certificate issued since, which is testament to how well he looked after it. And he really did look after it—after the service stamps stop, he performed his own servicing on a regular basis. Consequently, the Mercedes has never required any major attention, although in 2014 it was fitted with a stainless steel exhaust by Longlife.
The car’s condition really speaks for itself, but the service and MOT records are certainly worth inspecting, too. As one would expect with such a cherished car, the full book pack is present, containing the service book, owner’s manual, Europe Service manual, Blaupunkt audio guide and British Mercedes-Benz dealer map. The Mercedes also comes with two keys, and a current MOT with no advisories valid until July, 2026.
