Mercedes enthusiasts know that the R129 series boasts virtually unmatched build quality. Not yet endowed with a large number of fragile computers, *** solid and durable buttons that do not wear out in a few months, and *** a robust fabric hood with a classic look that does not creak, groan or rustle: in short, the solidity and reliability of this SL generation stand out down to the smallest detail.
Presented in 1989, the SL R129 faced the difficult task of making people forget the R107. Like any proper German car, it would not break with a stylistic rupture, but would offer a “modern” design, reflecting what one expects from a Mercedes SL. The real revolution would come from the vehicle’s technology: a retractable roll-bar that opens automatically to protects the cabin in a rollover, traction control, adaptive suspension, ABS, airbags and so on: everything was designed to clearly signal the birth of a new generation of Mercedes.
As for the engines, there is something for every taste. A 3-litre inline six with 24 valves producing 231 horsepower and a 5-litre V8 with 326 horsepower. In 1992, a V12 was added to the top of the range, a 6-litre engine delivering 395 horsepower. But that wasn’t all: in 1993, the SL 280 and the SL 320 (inline six of 3. 2 litres with 231 horsepower) replaced the 300 SL-24.
Trivia: It must be said that the R129 enjoyed unusual longevity for a “modern” car: produced from 1989 to 2001, lightly restyled in 1995 and 1998, it attracted 204, 940 buyers over its career (as many as the R107, produced for 18 years).
A unique feature: it is equipped with an electric fabric hood, but as standard there is also a hard top that converts it into a coupe in winter.
The R129 is neither revolutionary nor sporty, but bears the Mercedes style that reached its peak, in an era when technology became a selling point and a certain art of living that includes real power and comfort.
