Lot 2 5, 814 miles from new; Gus Kuhn-supplied 1973 MV Agusta 750S Registration no. RPC 1L Frame no. MV4C75* 2140271* Engine no. 214-0307 Developed from its long line of highly successful multi-cylinder racers, MV Agusta’s first road-going four - the 4C, a twin-carburettor, 600cc, shaft-driven tourer - appeared in 1965. But the public demanded something more exciting from many-times World Champions MV, and the Gallarate manufacturer duly obliged in 1968, upping capacity to 743cc and further boosting maximum power (to 65bhp) by fitting a quartet of Dell’Orto carburettors to the revised 750S, a high-speed symphony in red, white and blue. Perhaps surprisingly for a sports model, the 750S retained the 4C’s shaft final drive while the frame too was virtually identical to that of its predecessor. Hand made in limited numbers and priced accordingly, the 750S was way beyond the financial reach of the average enthusiast. Marque specialist Mick Walker got to try a mint, low mileage example in 1983, recording the event in his book MV Agusta Fours: “The experience was unique; the rider was transported to a different level, and made to feel really special. There was certainly a pronounced 'feel-good factor'.” Although no lightweight - it weighed nearly as much as a Kawasaki Z1 - the 750S gave little away in outright performance terms to such larger machinery, thanks, no doubt, to its engine’s Grand Prix heritage. Testing a 750S in 1975, Bike magazine found the motor very powerful: “Surprisingly it also has great reserves of torque and pulls happily from four thousand. It’s probably the most powerful 750cc motor made; in a straight drag with a Z1 it lost only a few yards up to 100mph.” Bike rated the 750S as “one of the most dramatic-looking bikes made, the real stuff of legend”. Few would disagree. According to the private vendor, this 750S is one of five officially imported by the famous South London dealer Gus Kuhn in 1973. It is said to have had only three owners, one of them for 44 years, and has covered approximately 5, 800 miles from new. The MV is accompanied by a comprehensive service history including the original supply invoices; original old-style green logbook; and owner's manual signed by former MV works rider and World Champion, Phil Read. The original logbook shows that the MV was first registered to Romans of Woking Ltd, while its first private owner was one G D Brown of Godalming, Surrey. In 1974 the MV passed to Mr Graham Cook, founder of the well respected car dealership, Bramley. The machine was kept very much as a collector's piece and ridden sparingly. The original tax disc (expiring April 1974) remains with the motorcycle. By the year 2000 the MV had covered only 2, 932 miles when it was sent to world-renowned MV specialist, Dave Kay, for a thorough renovation. The bike was then returned to long-term storage. Since then it has been recommissioned in 2010, 2015 and 2023, on the last occasion by Ray Petty Meccanica. The accompanying HPI report records the current keeper since 07/ 04/ 2021, notes two previous keepers and confirms first UK registration on 14/ 05/ 1973. The Gov. uk online MoT history database shows multiple test records between June 2007 when the mileage was noted at 3, 150 miles, and August 2017 when it stood at 5, 339 miles; the odometer now reads 5, 814 miles.
