Description
This is an incredibly rare matching numbers, show class standard MG TD MKII C (Competition) and it’s a car we know very well having known the restorer over ten years. This particular model is commonly known as the Competition model and was launched onto the market due to the strong demand for parts and accessories to increase and improve performance of the TD model. This model was originally known as the MKII MG TD but later was called the TDC, C representing Competition. The model also came about due to the exploits of the famous racing driver, Dick Jacobs who owned W Jacobs and Son Ltd, Mill Garage, the most famous of all MG dealerships in Chigwell Road, South Woodford, Essex.
The production TDC featured Andrex shock absorbers in addition to the standard items, larger 1. 5-inch carburettors with increased inlet ports, right side bonnet bulge to incorporate the larger carburettors, larger intake manifold and air cleaner, larger valves, increased compression ratio, higher rev limit to 6, 000 rpm, twin electric fuel pumps and lines and a higher performance ignition coil.
This magnificent example has been rebuilt to the highest of standards by a meticulous expert restorer. We first met this particular restorer when he completed a Jaguar XK150 S DHC to a true show class condition, it was at the time the finest we had ever had in the business. It was completed to original specification and sold for in the region of £150, 000. At the time we saw this MG TD in his garage (around 2014) awaiting rebuild and then, we said once completed, we’d love to one day have the car.
The MG sat in the garage for a few more years before a three year full rebuild was completed in 2025. 992 YUY has been subject of the most magnificent body off restorations, and the underside is truly first class. A full photo record superbly documents the rebuild that has been carried out to show class condition. The bare chassis was painted, the body totally rebuilt and beautifully painted, the TD totally re-chromed and then completely re-trimmed to include weather equipment. The engine was stripped and fully rebuilt, as was the gearbox, brakes, steering, suspension (including original shock absorbers), electrical and fuel system and the car completed to an original specification. The car also retains matching numbers and is incredibly correct.
On the road 992 YUY is truly outstanding, the engine performs beautifully, gear changes are smooth and the car pulls up and handles perfectly. The MG has covered just a few hundred miles since completion and is without doubt one of, if not the best TD’s we’ve had the pleasure of ever selling. A rebuild to this standard today would be several times the value of the car, it really is a first-class example with show winning potential. Coming with restoration photo album, file of invoices and full weather equipment, this is something quite special and will be one of the most correct examples remaining.
