Description

For many years, ‘Freude am Fahren’ was BMW’s motto. Everything was geared towards ensuring the driver enjoyed driving a model from Bayerische Motoren Werke. In sporting terms, the brand enjoyed success with, amongst others, the E30 M3 in the DTM and rallying, and of course the M1 in the Procar Championship. The fact that these sporting successes bore immediate fruit was evident from the growing demand for the road-going cars. The 3 Series was a hit with the younger target group, the 5 Series a serious alternative for the celebrated executive, and the 6 Series the ultimate combination of stylish and sporty transport for those who could afford a more expensive car. The coupé from this E24 series was, in fact, the GT as we know it today.

The 635CSi was the top-of-the-range model in that series. For only the M635CSi was faster, but also a good €20, 000 more expensive to buy. And so many people opted for the ‘standard’ 635 CSi, which, with 218 hp, had more than enough power in principle. That power came from a 3. 5-litre straight-six, available with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic for greater comfort. The design was typical of BMW at the time. The sloping ‘shark nose’ gave the car a sporty look, but the low waistline ensured that the car did not appear flashy but rather elegant. The standard-fit BBS wheels were commonplace at the time. And the twin exhausts, mounted slightly off-centre, were a distinctive feature of the 635CSi. Inside, the ‘Freude am Fahren’ was fully evident: the centre console was angled towards the driver, the seating position was designed for comfortable long-distance driving, and the rear passengers had no complaints about their own ‘little cockpit’ in the back seat. Features such as air conditioning, cruise control and heated seats were optional, but were already available.

The 635CSi we are pleased to offer has a wonderful history. The car was purchased new on 5 May 1981 by its first and only owner. She chose the distinctive colour combination of Kastanienrot metallic, paired with a light fabric interior and a comfortable automatic gearbox. The car was taken directly to Malaga, where it has spent its entire life driving under the Spanish sun. Thanks to the dry climate, the car is perfectly preserved; the underbody and bodywork showed not a single trace of rust upon arrival. We have touched up the cosmetic details and had the car fully repainted to address scratches and minor signs of wear. The underbody and interior have been cleaned but remain entirely original and undamaged. The original service booklets, containing service stamps, are present. The current mileage is 80, 077.

This 635CSi deserves to be seen. It is a stunning sight thanks to the colour combination, and the automatic gearbox makes the car a comfortable travelling companion. We would like to invite you to come and admire this magnificent example.
