Description

The MkI was introduced in 1955 as a smaller saloon car to compliment the larger models available at the time. Overseen by renowned Jaguar engineer William “Bill” Heynes it was the first Jaguar saloon car to feature monocoque construction. William Heynes oversaw the design of the XK range of sports cars: XK120, XK140, XK150, including full design of the C-Type 1951, followed by his monocoque body design of the D-Type 1954, and then the E-Type 1961 Innovations such as disc brakes were also unusual to see on a car of that era. Available with a 2. 4 or 3. 4 version of the six cylinder “XK” engine the car, transmission options included a 4 speed manual with or without overdrive or a 3 speed automatic.
The MkI was a successful race car in period, it being far lighter and better handling than the MkVII that was campaigned previously. The powerful engine, relative light weight and compact size was an ideal combination to compete in the British Saloon Car Championship, as well as race and rally events around the world.
The race-prepared MkI for sale here is from 1959, the final year of production. The car has competed over the last 10 years in the most prestigious historic racing event, the Goodwood Revival, most recently with former F1 driver and Le Mans winner David Brabham behind the wheel. The crowd-favourite St Mary’s Trophy race for touring cars alternates yearly between 50’s and 60’s cars, with this car being a regular in the 50’s version. The car has a specific link back to engineer Bill Heynes, with this car being meticulously prepared and rebuilt by Bill’s grandson William Heynes. Three generations of knowledge have been invested into this Mk1 to develop it into a competitive and reliable race car. William Heynes Ltd have confirmed they will be happy to continue running the car for its new owner. It is now available to purchase, directly from Jaguar Classic as a turnkey example, with a brand-new, built, ready-to-race engine.
