Introduced in June 1970, the Triumph Stag was conceived as a luxury convertible sportscar to rival the likes of the R107-series Mercedes-Benz SL. As such, it came equipped with electric windows, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, and servo-backed disc / drum brakes as standard. Based around a two-door monocoque bodyshell, the newcomer featured all-round independent suspension (McPherson strut front / semi-trailing arm rear) and a well laid-out 2+2 cabin. With some 145bhp and 167lbft of torque on tap from its bespoke 2997cc SOHC V8 engine, the model was reputedly capable of 120mph.
First registered on 5 May 1978, this automatic transmission Stag has benefited from much work and retains its original Triumph 3-litre engine. A letter on file from Club Triumph summarises an inspection of the car carried out on 28 July 2026. This states that on the 2nd owner’s passing a few years ago it was placed in dry storage. The mileage of c. 54, 461 could well be correct but cannot be warranted. Mention is made of it being professionally resprayed in its Pimento Red colour and the panel gaps being even. Fitted with a hard top, it is understood the soft top is in good order. Riding on Minator alloy wheels and with good chromework overall, it is said to have a tidy interior with good seats although the door cards are warped. The carpets have been replaced. Lumenition electronic ignition is fitted and the twin Strombergs are understood to have been recently overhauled. It is said to sound sweet and idle well but was not road tested. WVU 478S is said to be “well above average” and a sound basis to improve to show standard. Understood to be very late example, it comes with a history file plus both hard and soft tops.
