Among the last ‘old school’ Bentleys to be produced before the marque was acquired by Volkswagen
Warranted 56, 000 miles from new
A final hurrah for the unlikely sports saloon which reinvigorated the marque, the 1997 model-year Turbo R was built on the longer wheelbase as standard. Perhaps conscious that its Arnage successor would house a smaller capacity BMW engine and require considerably fewer man hours to build, the ‘last-of-the-line’ Turbo R attracted 480 buyers (367 RHD / 113 LHD). Heavily facelifted the previous season, the ’97-MY cars gained larger diameter front disc brakes and Electronic Traction Assistance System to better cope with their prodigious outputs (385bhp/ 569lbft) and performance (0-60mph: 6. 3 seconds / 155mph).
A notably early 1997-model year example (production of which began at chassis CH59002), ‘N362 HTU’ was first serviced by the Bentley Motors’ School of Instruction at 1, 097 miles. Consequently thought to have been retained by the factory for training / reference purposes, at least initially, the Turbo R boasts an additional eleven stamps in its maintenance book all from main dealers (Ron Stratton, Broughtons, Bentley Manchester, Bentley Birmingham). Becoming the sports saloon’s third custodian in 1999, the current registered keeper’s father passed it to him three years later. Warranted to have covered c. 56, 300 miles from new (but only 200 or so since its last service), the Bentley is due to be freshly MOT tested ahead of the sale. A rare, ‘last-of-the-line’ Turbo R with an impressive service history, ‘N362 HTU’ is worthy of close inspection. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, history file, four sets of keys and tools.
