Description
The BMW E36 convertible was an icon of its time. Nothing symbolised the ambition and upwardly mobile vibe of the era quite like it – just look at the plethora of Hollywood films and celebrities for whom the appearance of the E36 drop top said (or still does say) immediately ‘success’ (or sometimes more pejoratively ‘Yuppie’) – Breaking Bad, Blackberry (the movie), American Beauty, Clueless, The Bird Cage – to name but a few – even Britney Sears drove an E36 drop top at the heady heights of her success. Now, ageing beautifully, they remind us of simpler times, when BMW were at the very top of their game, ‘electric car’ meant an old Sinclair C5, and ‘partying like it was 1999’ still lay ahead.
Powered by the grunty but smooth M52B28 2. 8 litre 6-cylinder engine, the 328i convertible offered elegance and effortless power – just under 200 bhp is on offer with 280 Nm of torque – and an engine that could be used in every day traffic – reliable, easy to maintain and responsive.
Finding a low mileage, unspoiled example is understandably a tough ask – these were usable daily drivers back in the day, and people used them well! This particular car has quite clearly led a cosseted life, with its two former keepers only running up just under 32, 000 miles since it was first registered in April of 1998. Finished in beautiful Individual Montreal Blue with light grey Montana leather interior, the car also comes with a factory hard top. For the enthusiasts amongst you, it is worth noting the desirability and rarity of the manual gearbox.
Our technical team have carried out a thorough inspection of this timewarp beauty and are very impressed with the results – this car is every bit as lovely as the mileage – and pictures – suggest.
