The BMW C1 was a revolutionary enclosed scooter made for BMW by Bertone in Italy, the legendary Italian industrial design company better known for styling cars for manufacturers such as Maserati and Lamborghini. It featured a windscreen, aluminium roll-bar and a solid roof designed to protect the rider from the elements, with a design brief to offer the convenience of a scooter but with the weather protection of a car. With an emphasis on safety, BMW put the C1 through car-like crash testing procedures and claimed that in a head-on collision the C1 offered a standard of accident protection comparable to a compact car. The prime marketing strategy was to convert car buyers onto 2 wheels, and the C1 was claimed to be so safe that the rider did not need to wear a helmet to ride it. An expensive option in its day, very few have survived the rigors of commuting use.
This rare C1 was bought new by the vendor in 2000 and used sparingly by him until 2013, when it was put into storage in a dry garage. Accumulating just 1389 miles in that time, it is presented in good original condition. Throughout its use, it was kept serviced and MOTd, but having been stood for a number of years, it will need recommissioning before use. It will be supplied with a good paperwork file and a current V5C.
