The Triumph Stag is a fascinating chapter in British automotive history—an elegant grand tourer that attempted to combine the nobility of English design with the performance and reliability of its continental rivals. Introduced in 1970 as a stylish four-seat convertible, it was intended to compete with the Mercedes SL, but its journey to legendary status was not without its twists and turns. Under the bonnet was a completely new V8 developed in-house by Triumph, which—as later became apparent—was just as characterful as it was temperamental. Nevertheless, the Stag won the hearts of drivers with its unmistakable sound, T-bar frame and distinctive appearance designed by Giovanni Michelotti. This 1977 Triumph Stag is fitted with a 2, 997 cm³ V8 engine paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The engine and gearbox underwent a complete overhaul approximately twenty years ago, as did the body paint, upholstery and interior trim, testifying to a carefully executed restoration. Two years ago, the car received regular maintenance, including cleaning of the fuel tank, which is essential for trouble-free operation of this type of vehicle. The body paint now shows cracks in places, consistent with the age of the restoration. The fabric roof is currently missing. Overall, this is a mechanically very solid example of a late-series Stag that has retained its technical integrity and authentic British character.
