In 1969, Harley-Davidson was facing bankruptcy. It found an unlikely saviour in AMF (American Machine & Foundry), best known for its bowling balls, which steered the venerable bike-builder through the choppy waters of the ’70s, before selling it back to Willie Davidson in 1981. Harley-Davidson had already acquired a half-***** in the Italian lightweight manufacturer Aermacchi in 1960, and AMF took the firm over completely in 1973, enabling it to market a range of lightweights in America and Europe as AMF Harley-Davidsons. The SX125 was one of a range of machines introduced to cash in on the dirt bike craze. With a 2. 2-litre fuel tank and a weight of just 247lbs., it was one of the smallest bikes ever to carry a Harley badge, but proved its worth on America’s dusty trails.
Never previously registered in Britain and seemingly imported from Milan, this SX125 was purchased by our vendor in 2020 to form part of his varied motorcycle collection. It is a particularly unusual example with a low-level exhaust, which we are advised was available in 1974 only. It underwent a restoration in 2018 but was last run in October, 2020, so it will need recommissioning. It is supplied without documentation.
