The Lotus Esprit's most famous appearance was undoubtedly in the James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me", but that was an Esprit S1 from the first generation, which also had another outing as an S3 Turbo in a subsequent Bond film. Even more popular with filmmakers, however, was the second-generation Lotus Esprit, penned by Peter Stevens.
As early as 1989, shortly after its launch, it thundered across cinema screens for several minutes in "Pretty Woman". The Lotus management in Hethel proved accommodating and, after reviewing the script, supplied four brand-new silver examples of the freshly launched Esprit SE model. With nearly 270 PS, it was the most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder Esprit of its era! It didn't hurt the publicity value that Richard Gere, apparently spoilt by limousines as a millionaire, struggled to engage the gears with the manual gearbox, but Julia Roberts took over the wheel halfway through the drive and showed Gere how to properly drive this car. The silver Lotus Esprit SE with four-cylinder engine looks absolutely stunning in the evening light of Beverly Hills.
The second-generation Esprit made another appearance in 1992 in "Basic Instinct" (with Sharon Stone), this time in white and black as a matching pair - and apparently that's what was needed in that 1992 box office hit, which has long since become a cult classic in its own right.
