Description
When the Porsche 928 S was introduced in 1978, it left the public somewhat perplexed. Conceived as a successor to the legendary 911, it represented a radical departure from Porsche’s established formula. Here was a large V8 mounted at the front, with none of the additional weight traditionally required in the front bumpers.
One of the 928’s most remarkable characteristics is its exceptional weight distribution. The gearbox is mounted at the rear in transaxle configuration, helping to achieve a near-perfect balance between the front and rear axles. It also incorporates one of the 928’s most distinctive technical features: the Weissach axle, named after Porsche’s famous R&D centre.
The result is remarkable stability and confidence through corners. The 928 is something of a mid-corner assassin, allowing its driver to carry considerable speed and power through a bend while maintaining impressive grip. As a small aside, the Weissach axle can be regarded as an early forerunner of the active rear-steering systems found on modern performance cars. Porsche does, after all, have a habit of being ahead of its time.
And then there is the styling. With its unmistakable Porsche design and distinctive late-1970s and 1980s lines, the 928 was a striking car when new and, remarkably, still looks modern today.
This particular example was originally delivered in the United States and is finished in the highly evocative combination of Indian Red over a beige leather interior. It is a wonderfully period-correct colour scheme and suits the character of the 928 beautifully.
More importantly, considerable sums have been invested in this car in recent years by a number of respected specialists. The fortunate next owner will therefore have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of that expenditure rather than undertake it themselves.
For anyone looking for a particularly handsome 928 S, this example deserves closer consideration.
