One of the greatest off-road lightweights of its era
British-registered in 2021
Seemingly restored to a high standard with little subsequent use
Yamaha announced its DT1 250 Enduro for the American market in 1968, as the off-road craze was really taking off, and the consensus was that it outclassed all competition. The little five-speed would go anywhere, it seemed, more capably than any other 250. For the 1973 model year, it evolved into the DT3, which was less revolutionary but nevertheless set a high-bar for reliability under off-road conditions. The single-cylinder two-stroke with alloy head and barrel was said to produce 24bhp. It was equipped with lights and gauges for road use, and Cycle World said: “The DT3 is the kind of bike you can pour gas and oil in and then ride for hours without fouling a plug or losing any nuts and bolts. It’s really foolproof… Instead of being part-racer, [it] offers totally reliable off-road transportation.”
This lovely 1972 DT3 was imported and registered in 2021, and is offered for sale having seemingly been restored to a very high standard. The low odometer reading of 220 miles suggests the engine has been overhauled and is still being run in. Having had little use, some checks may be required before the bike can be ridden, but it is clearly a well cared-for example which deserves further inspection.
