Description
1970 BSA A50 ROYAL STAR 500CCRegistration number: MCO 151HFrame number: PD02786ASOREngine number: Not recordedOdometer reading: 31, 753 miles (unwarranted)This vehicle has been fully restored (in fact restored twice by the same person in two different ownerships)A handsome example of BSA’s well-regarded 500cc parallel twin 'gentlemen's express', the Royal Star offered a refined and practical alternative to the larger-capacity British motorcycles of its era. Powered by a 498cc, air-cooled, overhead-valve twin-cylinder engine, the A50 employed BSA’s unit-construction design, integrating the engine and gearbox into a single assembly. This modern approach brought a cleaner installation and more compact mechanical package, while the single Amal carburettor favoured tractable performance and straightforward maintenance. With its four-speed gearbox, traditional cycle parts and characteristic British styling, the Royal Star was intended as a versatile roadster, combining relaxed touring ability with sufficient performance for everyday use. Sharing much of its engineering with the larger A65 range, it benefited from the experience BSA had accumulated in producing parallel-twin motorcycles. The 1970 model year represents the closing chapter of the A50’s original development before BSA’s subsequent move towards the revised oil-in-frame chassis design. Today, these late examples appeal to enthusiasts who appreciate the traditional engineering and understated character of Birmingham-built motorcycles. The odometer displays 31, 753 miles, although the reading is unwarranted. An appealing opportunity to acquire a classic British 500cc twin, the Royal Star offers a distinctive alternative to the more familiar 650cc machines of the period. This vehicle is located near from Newton Abbot, Devon TQ13 where it will need to be collected.
