Birmingham Small Arms was established in Small Heath, Birmingham, in 1861 to manufacture weapons. Around the turn of the century, they started making bicycles and progressed onto motorcycles a few years later, and come 1924 their annual sales reached 26, 000. During that time, BSA employed a logical naming strategy, wherein the number denoted the model year, i. e. H25 means a 1925 Model H. The ‘H’ part referred to single-cylinder, sidevalve engine of 550cc, which was paired with a three-speed, hand-change gearbox and chain final drive. It was the largest offering in the twelve-model 1925 range, and hence the best-suited to carrying a sidecar, of which BSA itself offered seven different models.
BSA H25s are now very few and far between, but what is rarer is finding one in sound, unrestored condition. Rarer still is finding such a machine with an original sidecar attached. We are delighted to present just such an offering in magnificent ‘oily rag’ condition, which is being offered for sale having been in the ownership of the same family since 1927—a full ninety-nine years. However, it has not been on the road for some time now and will require a degree of light recommissioning, but it does start with ease and runs well, though the cosmetic side may better suit the preservation approach. This wonderful machine comes with much history, including the V5C, an old buff logbook, and period mileage logs and receipts going back to 1930.
