Description
1928 AJS 500CC K9Registration number: SV 7466Frame number: K130118Engine number: K9130118Previously fully restored. A handsome example of British vintage motorcycling, this 1928 AJS Model K9 represents the traditional engineering and purposeful character for which A. J. Stevens & Co. of Wolverhampton earned its considerable reputation. Powered by a 498cc, side-valve, four-stroke single-cylinder engine, the K9 was designed around the qualities valued by contemporary riders: mechanical simplicity, dependable performance and strong pulling power. Its three-speed gearbox and substantial engine made it particularly well suited to touring and, when required, sidecar use. The 1928 model year occupies an interesting position in AJS history, marking the final chapter of the traditional flat-tank era before the adoption of saddle-tank styling. The K9’s restrained appearance and robust mechanical specification typify the larger-capacity British motorcycles of the late 1920s, when manufacturers sought to combine everyday practicality with the durability required for longer journeys over often challenging roads. Although AJS became celebrated for its sporting and competition successes, machines such as the K9 were equally important to the marque’s reputation, providing practical transport with the unmistakable character of a large-capacity vintage single. Today, the appeal lies in that combination of period engineering, distinctive mechanical character and usability within the vintage motorcycle movement. This Model K9 offers an appealing opportunity to acquire a representative example of AJS’s 500cc range from the final year of its flat-tank production era.
