The 274th of just 300 examples of the Corvette built during the first year of production, this car is finished in the universal 1953 factory livery of Polo White over a Red interior. Completed by a blue-painted straight-six, the colours paid tribute to the United States flag.
A bill of sale dated to October 1967 records that the Chevrolet passed from Russell Etter of Pittsburgh to fellow Pennsylvania resident Wilbert F Huntley in Coraopolis for $1, 350. The Corvette is thought to have remained in single-family ownership for the best part of four decades. Letters on file from June 2001 indicate that the car transferred to Wilbert’s son, Lawson M Huntley of Monroe in North Carolina, who passed away in 2005.
Based in Pendleton in Indiana, pre-eminent model specialist Blue Flame Restoration—led by 1953 Corvette expert Brett Henderson—performed a body-off restoration. The car was then purchased by the consigning owner via RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island auction in March 2015 and subsequently registered in the United Kingdom. Forever stylish, this American automotive icon awaits its next devoted owner.
