The 1961 Abarth 850 TC was a small sports car, equally at home as a daily driver or on the circuit.
Carlo Abarth transformed a family car such as the Fiat 600 into a racing beast which, *** its numerous victories, cemented the name of the Turin workshop on the Olympus of motoring.
The Abarth 850 TC was one of the most successful transformations in Carlo Abarth's career. Unveiled in February 1961, the 850 TC retained the mechanical layout of the Fiat 600 D: there was the four-cylinder engine, originally 767 cc, with the bore (62. 5 mm) and stroke (69 mm) enlarged, raising the capacity to 847 cc. New pistons increased the compression ratio to 9. 2:1. A higher-performance camshaft, a 32 Solex carburettor, a new air filter, a different crankshaft and an exhaust designed for sporting use were also fitted. All of this allowed the 850 TC to reach a top speed of 140 km/ h, which was no small feat for a utility car of the era. Consequently, a new braking system was required, *** disc brakes replaced drums on the front wheels. Despite its sporting character, the interior of the Abarth 850 TC featured elegant Jaeger instrumentation and a sporty three-spoke aluminium steering wheel.
Carlo Abarth created the perfect competition weapon: the Abarth 850 TC. Success on the track soon followed, as the little Abarths triumphed in the gruelling endurance races, and the 850 TC's victories were soon matched by its evolutions, such as the 1000 TC and the Radiale. One of its most celebrated feats was at the 500 kilometre race of 1961, held on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in Germany. To commemorate this milestone, a special series called the "Fiat Abarth 850 TC Nürburgring" was produced.
