1992 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 (R129)
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL-24 belongs to the first generation of the R129 series, which was introduced in 1989 as the successor to the successful R107. With its sleek lines, wide body, and distinctive design by Bruno Sacco, the R129 represented a significant step forward for Mercedes-Benz. The model combined the elegance of a classic roadster with advanced engineering, excellent safety features, and the high level of comfort for which the brand was known at the time.
This 1992 model is finished in stylish Arctic White, combined with a dark blue leather interior. The white bodywork forms a beautiful contrast with the blue upholstery, the dark blue dashboard, and the wood trim on the center console and door panels. The characteristic 16-inch alloy wheels with chrome finish complement the appearance of this SL beautifully. The car also features electrically adjustable seats with memory function, automatic climate control, and cruise control. In addition to the electrically operated soft top, the removable hardtop is also included in the equipment.
Under the hood is the 3. 0-liter M104 inline six-cylinder engine with 24 valves, producing 232 hp. This power unit distinguishes itself from the regular 300 SL through its four-valve technology, with which Mercedes-Benz managed to achieve a particularly refined combination of performance and smoothness at the time. The engine is coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission that transfers the power to the rear wheels. As a result, the 300 SL-24 has the character of a comfortable grand tourer, while simultaneously possessing sufficient power for sporty driving pleasure.
The R129 was also particularly advanced in the field of safety. For this model, Mercedes-Benz developed, among other things, an automatically deploying roll bar that rises in a fraction of a second in the event of an impending rollover. In addition, the car features an advanced body structure and various electronic safety systems. These technical developments made the R129 one of the most modern roadsters on the market at the time.
The history of this Mercedes-Benz begins in the United States, where the car was delivered new and registered in the state of Georgia. From February 1994, the car remained within the same family for over thirty years. During this period, various maintenance and repair works were carried out, including the replacement of the soft-top hydraulic cylinders. The hardtop headliner was also renewed in 2025. Some of these works can be found in the available documentation.
The interior exudes the typical Mercedes-Benz quality of the early nineties. The dark blue leather seats, the wood trim, and the uncluttered dashboard combine to create a pleasant and classic environment. The electrically adjustable seats feature a memory function with three preferred settings. Its American origin is recognizable, among other things, by the speedometer in miles. The odometer currently shows 98, 026 miles, which corresponds to approximately 157, 758 kilometers.
The Mercedes-Benz R129 has since secured a permanent place among the brand's modern classics. The early versions, in particular, distinguish themselves through their original design and the high-quality construction that was so characteristic of Mercedes-Benz during this period. This 300 SL-24 combines the powerful 24-valve six-cylinder engine with a classic color scheme, an attractively finished interior, and a long history of American ownership. A stylish roadster that convincingly represents the character of the Mercedes-Benz SL, whether open or closed.
