“These vehicles are notorious for rusting - this one has just gone through it's MOT test and is ready to go. It has 90000 miles on the clock I have done the last 30000. I have waxoyled and undersealed the vehicle It comes with a brand new tonneau cover, steel sun visor and Ifor Williams canopy. Please see futher description about my experiences with peugeot 504 pick ups if you want to learn about these quirky, but great work horses.

I am truly sad to see it go, I am a retired Engineer, but I am suffering from a heart complaint and I am not fit enough to complete the retoration. So, this is an ideal opportunity to obtain a 504 that has been made roadworthy - Lots are beyond saving. You can drive or do a running retoration of this vehicle. It has new wings (pattern) new front upper and lower valances all in grey primer, new rear spat panel, New genuine sill. I am including enough rare spare parts for you to maintain and improve the vehicle into become a great example and one of the last of the last 504 pick ups.”

Read this even if you don’t buy my 1994 Peugeot 504 pick up – it could save you a lot of trouble if you have set your heart of owning one of these great but flawed pick ups.

Why flawed? Simple – they rust to extent that there are not many of these vehicles left on the road. 50 or so left registered in the UK. The reason is that they were built using 1960’s technology with non-existent rust prevention techniques. Most have been scrapped, but don’t look in the scrap yards for old ones. Due to the high value of scrap metal ALL UK 504’s of any shape or form have been crushed and the remains exported to China. You probably have a reconstituted 504 in your back garden masquerading as a barbeque or patio heater.

You may find the odd pick up being sold for repair – most will have fantastic engine and running gear, most will fail an MOT purely on structural corrosion that is assessed as beyond economic repair.

Where do they rust and rot? Where not would be easier!

Starting from the front:

Headlight reflectors – rust very badly – not an MOT fail, as long as the beam pattern is good

Bonnet – the front edge suffers from severe rust/ rot unless treated

Rot - Front valance, front slam panel, wings and inner wings – particularly the inner wings behind the headlights – water and mud trap.

Scuttle and front longitudinal chassis rails where engine subframe mounts

Doors – not too bad unless water drain channels blocked

Cab floor mainly near inner sills and under the carpet area – tricky repair to do well

Sills – sills – sills Most have been plated and plated and plated. Very few like mine have the original corrugated outer sill panel.

Inner sills – manly to the rear, but watch out the fuel tank mounts on the inner sill can rot with predictable results.

Membrane sills in between the inner outer again mainly rear – you will be able to put most of this into a bucket if it is rotten

Chassis rails and spring hangers – these are structural like the sills and big MOT fail point

Inner wheel arches and sill closure plates – rot – rot – rot

Rear outer wheel arches mud traps and rot always evident.

Pick up bed floor this is a very prone area particularly by the rear tailgate where heavy items are bounced on the deck. Later load liner can cause problems with water staying underneath and not draining away.

Spat panel (4 off) – they do suffer particularly the rear ones.

Rear valance – always rots away – new one fitted to this vehcile

Tailgate – not too bad, but most have some rust on the bottom edge – it is vulnerable when reversing and most have battle scars/ dents

Rear corner panels very vulnerable when reversing – difficult to repair, new panels V rare. 2 new genuine Peugeot ones with one new catch and two new stays. How did I find these?

Note original “bull bar” on later models is too heavy and will fracture the bumper mountings. Remove, they are not a good accessory.

Mechanical issues

Very few and far between just normal fair wear and tear. It will keep going well after the body has disintegrated.

Some quirky ones

You will find that the UJ will fail if not given 6 strokes of the grease gun every oil change – It will then weld itself with rust to the spline on the propshaft. V difficult to get off – but it can be done without damaging the propshaft etc. How do I know this? Previous owner didn’t have a grease gun!

The clutch pedal push rod will wear through at about 50, 000 miles – replace or weld up and grind to size brand new spare one included.

Handbrake cables seize – readily available on ebay. 2 new cables included in spares, I may fit if I have enough time.

Door check straps (steel wire) break if they are not lubricated Window winders snap when age hardened, be careful with them – lube the window mech.

Handbrake Mech ratchet spring will fail – these are difficult to replace. I bought a brand new complete handbrake unit instead.

Bench seat – upholstery not very robust – most will have tears and be threadbare. This one not bad at all – small tear in drivers side that will repair easily

Carpets and cab upholstery/ door cards – water damage due to poor door seals – these are the same I have various carpets and trim to make good. All included. Drivers door seal not too good. – one on order included.

Steering wheel – no power steering - so will be highly polished on cars with over 50K on clock Fitted new period steering wheel cover. No rear view mirror view fitted to these. Stick on one if you want it.

Heater fan noisey bearings squeeks a bit in this one.

Drivers door handle quite fragile and new ones are rare. New one fitted to drivers door (got it from Argentina) Ignition switches fall apart – again new one sourced and fitted (South Africa).

Rear lights always rot and are mostly replaced with trailer board units which look rubbish unless you have my stock of spares. – loads of lenses and one complete NOS tail/ indicator unit.

Worthwhile accessories

New Old Stock Ifor Williams (included) truck top. It's lighter than the truckman fibreglass version

New Old Stock - Original Peugeot toneau cover – very rare item – (included)

Rear mudflaps – genuine Peugeot part fitted

Sun Visor (steel) – great custom look – specially made at great expense – looks really cool, like the rest of the vehicle, it needs paint

Towbar not fitted but electrics fitted – towbar painted up ready to fit – do watch for rust and rot where the towbar mounts.

What you must do to save your 504 Pick up

Drill drain holes in the sills and pump waxoyl into them every year – the more the better. Wax, wax, wax and underseal every year and you may just slow the rust bug. In 20 years there will be none of these great vehicles left.

Oil/ Filter change every 5000

Fuel filter every 5000

New oil in the air filter oil bath every 15000

All new or good s/ h spares to go with the pick-up. If I get the right price

Quantity of headlights/ rear lights indicators, good blue s/ h bonnet, 2 white doors with glass/ door cards , 4 wheel rims, 2 sets of discs new and 2 sets pads (new), 2x fuel filters, handbrake mech, clutch pushrod (new), rear tailgate stays box 2 (new) rear tailgate catch (new). Front bumper s/ h tonneau cover and ifor Williams top. Rear corner panels – new genuine Peugeot (real hens teeth) 504 chrome badge (new)

This truck may look externally a tad rough, but it probably one of the most structurely sound 504 pick ups in the country. It is crying out for a great paint job – to make it into something special that can be appreciated for a good few years yet. I am only selling due to my ill health. It has been my daily driver for over 6 years and I have spent a fortune in time and effort maintaining it in a road worthy and serviceable condition. I have used it for gardening works and transporting logs for our log burning stove. It has been a fantastic runner, but I am being persuaded to get something thing much newer. Forgot to say I have 3 or 4 spare headlights – and it is running on 4 new Barum 185 R15C 8 ply tyres. The spare is an unused Michelin, but the spare wheel rim is very rusty (4 good rims included in the spares)

22 November 2013 Latest – MOT passed everything apart from left hand lower ball joint and left front brake hose – advisories – left and right handbrake cables. The vehicle will come with 12 month MOT – I can tax it at cost if you wish to drive it away.

I have a brand new drivers door seal on order that I will include in the sale and include all of the spares listed if it I get near my asking price.

Please call me if you have any questions. Pick up is located near Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

PS By the way the reg plate was one from Walchry in Guilford and indicates this is the last 504 pick-up ever registered. L54 ***

PPS I have a microfische plate for the pick up – this is included too along with Haynes and factory workshop manuals.
