Unique opportunity. Excellent 1973 right hand drive DS Safari 5 speed. Same engineer owner since 1989, previously owned by Open University professor. Midnight blue over white, grey interior and jersey seats. Very good condition all round.
Restored by Brodie Engineering in 1991 and by Heritage Restorations in 2008/ 9. Extensive photographic record of first class restoration work by Heritage. New OEM inner rear wings, new tailgate window with HRW, new boot floor and stainless steel door bottoms all round. Regularly Waxoyled - the body and chassis are in very good condition.
Upgraded in 1996! I fitted a DS23 EFI engine, raised the compression ratio to 9. 6:1 and converted it to run on twin Weber 44IDF carburettors rather than D Jetronic fuel injection. Fitted a Facet electric fuel pump, throttle cable, ITG air filter and high capacity alloy fuel tank (by Peacock Engineering). Also had the flywheel lightened and balanced, and fitted a new clutch. In 2001 Hayward and Scott made a bespoke stainless steel exhaust based closely on the standard mid-60s design but less restrictive. Lumenition electronic ignition was added and it was rolling road tuned by Aldon Automotive in Brierly Hill so the jetting is dead right. Then in 2007 I fitted an XM hydractive valve to the front suspension which cuts roll when cornering - a quite amazing improvement! Last year it had new front discs and engine mounts, and last month it had a new battery.
Needless to say the car is much faster and breathes much better than a normal DS Safari. Drivability in modern traffic is much improved. It is smooth, dead easy to start when freezing cold or stinking hot, idles nicely, moves off quickly, changes gear quickly etc. It's much easier to work on and access is very good compared with the EFI.
It has cost me a truly vast amount of time, effort and money over the years! Throughout my ownerships it's been used regularly every year, has always been dependable, including several family holidays in France. A regular attendee at Citroen Car Club rallies and the carb conversion was documented in the August 1996 CCC magazine.
MOT until April 2015, taxed until March 2015 (historic). I've got a few boxes of spares, a good steering rack and a 5 speed gearbox to go with it by separate negotiation if the buyer wishes.
Bad points? It doesn't have the rear dicky seats, I removed them a long time ago as they proved to be dangerous for transporting my kids. The roof seal and aluminium side trim is sound but a bit scruffy in places - all brightwork could do with a polish. There's a paint graze on the front undertray. The front armrest is the wrong colour.
This is a fantastic practical car. A unique opportunity for someone who wants to own the iconic Citroen estate car, but have a bit more oomph! I've maintained and developed it for a growing family for over 25 years. But now the family has grown up and left the nest, I think it might be time to move on. So here you go its for sale now..... before I change my mind .....
