The Volkswagen Golf Mk2 GTI 16S, launched in 1984, is a sporty version of the famous compact car. The successor to the Golf Mk1 GTI, it embodied a significant evolution with a slightly rounded design, developed under the direction of Schäfer at Volkswagen, while preserving the visual identity of its predecessor. Under the bonnet, the GTI 16S version was powered by a 1. 8-litre in-line four-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic injection. In 1986, a version with double overhead camshafts (DOHC) was introduced, delivering 139 bhp at 6, 100 rpm and 168 Nm of torque at 4, 600 rpm. This engine, more powerful than that of the standard GTI, marked a step forward in performance for sporty compacts of the era. The GTI 16S was also distinguished by 16V or 16S badges and special finishes. Produced until 1992, the Golf Mk2 GTI 16S saw some notable updates, such as the introduction of 'Big Bumpers' in 1990. The Mk2 was also the last generation of Golf to offer carburettor engines, before fuel injection became compulsory in Europe. This model remains a milestone for fans of sporty compacts.
