Stuart Turner, then Director of Ford Motorsport, convinced Walter Hayes, Vice-President of Public Relations, to support the project. Cosworth, already famous for its racing engines, developed the YBB engine, a 2. 0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder derived from the Pinto block, producing 204 bhp on the road and up to 300 bhp in competition. The design of the Sierra, often criticised since its launch in 1982, was reworked with aggressive aerodynamic modifications, including a large rear wing deemed essential for stability at high speed. The chassis benefited from a number of improvements inspired by competition successes, notably the experiences of Andy Rouse in the British championship and Jack Roush in the United States. The Borg-Warner T5 gearbox, borrowed from the Mustang, was modified to cope with high revs. Presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1985, the Sierra RS Cosworth enjoyed limited success but developed a formidable reputation on both the track and the road. The RS500 model, of which only 500 were produced, reinforced its legend with even more radical performance. With a 0-100 kph time of 6. 5 seconds and a top speed of 240 kph, it remains an iconic sports car of the 1980s.
