The Porsche 924 was produced from 1976 to 1988 and it was the successor model to the 914. The idea of designing a successor to the 914 was proposed as early as 1972, but it took another four years for real development to take shape due to the oil crisis. The 924 was the first Porsche with the engine mounted at the front, which was ‘contradictory’ with the Porsche brand. Nevertheless, this did not hinder sales and production from succeeding. The 924 has even become a highly sought-after classic car.
Initially, Porsche planned to produce the 911 only temporarily, but sales of the 911 had exploded, continuing in production. The 911 posed a ‘luxury problem’ for Porsche because they feared a sudden drop in sales if they relied on just one model. Therefore, an entry-level model was necessary. This entry-level model had already been made as the '912', then as the '914', and in 1976 the 924 arrived. The Porsche design team were tasked with creating an entry-level Porsche that could comfortably seat four people while embodying Porsche's sporting charisma. In 1976 they succeeded with the introduction of the 924. The 924 is a sporty Porsche coupé that accommodated four people and was equipped with the four-cylinder engine from the Audi 100, front-mounted, which was unusual for a Porsche car. This drew some criticism from people claiming it wasn’t ‘a real Porsche’. Nonetheless, 924 models gained genuine admiration over the years. This is reflected in the rising value of these models, which, like the iconic 911, makes for a solid investment.
Another unique feature of the Porsche 924 was its retractable headlights, which improved the car’s aerodynamics, as well as the balanced weight distribution achieved thanks to the combination of front-mounted engine and rear transmission. These two aspects contributed to its popularity. During its production run, around 120, 000 924s were produced.
Porsche 924 Turbo
The 924 almost met all customer wishes in the 1970s, but some felt that its naturally aspirated engine lacked the distinctive Porsche character. Fortunately, Porsche’s engineers were as quick as the cars they design, so they pragmatically responded by offering an optional turbocharger for the 924 from 1978.
To equip the 924 with a turbocharger, a few modifications had to be made to the 924’s engine. Some parts had to be replaced with modified components to boost performance. Externally, even the bonnet underwent a modification: NACA ducts were fitted to the bonnet. This not only visually distinguished a 924 Turbo from a regular 924, but also allowed hot air to escape when the 924 Turbo was at rest.
The 924 Turbo proved to be a real success. Its performance was heralded from launch, approaching even supercar levels. In 1981, a second, more powerful revised version of the 924 Turbo was introduced.
About 13, 000 units of the 924 Turbo were made. Enthusiasts have adored it from the start, and this has only strengthened over the decades.
