The Maserati 3500 GT Touring is one of those timeless Italian sports cars with plenty of style. Probably one of the most beautiful models produced by the coachbuilder Touring Superleggera, and even today an embodiment of Italian style. Beyond the beauty of the bodywork and the interior, the 3500 GT also features a fantastic engine which is an evolution of Maserati’s famous racing cars from the 1950s. How much more pedigree can you fit into a car then?
The example we are offering for sale is one of the finest on the market. Fully restored between 2005 and 2009, with most of its original ironmongery still in place. This was possible because Maserati spent most of its life in the south of Italy (Naples) and was not prone to rust and oxidation, as most of these cars suffered. The complete wiring loom has been replaced and manufactured to original specifications using the wiring and wire colours from factory specifications. The original NOS Cibié headlights have been fitted and the interior beautifully retrimmed in top full-grain hides. A complete rebuild of the suspension was carried out with the correct Koni Classic dampers and the braking system fully revised. Period Borrani wire wheels refurbished with Avon Turbosteel tyres have been installed. The level of fit and finish on this 3500 GT Touring is of a very high standard and perfectly suited to taking part in any world-class concours d’élégance around the globe.
As the owner is a true aesthete, he decided to give his Maserati a few small personal modifications to enhance both the driving experience and the overall style of the car. A set of Weber carburetters was installed in place of the Lucas injection system to offer more driving thrills and a more pleasing sound. These correct, period Weber 42DCOE carburettors were restored by the renowned specialist Viktor Gunther. To accentuate the elegant lines of the Touring-bodied Maserati, the chromed sill mouldings and the rear wing toppers were not fitted (and this has proved to be a genuine improvement in my humble opinion!). These small tweaks are, of course, easily reversible to original specifications, as the Lucas injection system factory-fitted with Maserati airbox will be supplied with the car, along with the restored and rechromed sill trims and wing tips.
In 2019, the owner had the engine completely rebuilt by British automotive engineer Raymond Sherratt because he was not satisfied with the performance. Today, the inline six-cylinder engine (with twin-spark ignition) runs like a dream and delivers a superb driving sensation.
The Maserati is well documented, with the original Italian Libretto still on file, as well as an ASI plaque. The restoration is documented with numerous invoices and photographs, as well as many magazines in which the car has appeared that are in the documentation file. Additionally, the original toolkit is still with the car, along with a spare Borrani wheel.
