With the 3500 GT, Maserati entered a new era at the end of the 1950s. For the first time, the marque successfully combined its great racing heritage with the ambition to build luxurious Gran Turismo cars for the road. The 3500 GT thus became Maserati’s first true series-production model and laid the foundation for the brand’s subsequent international success.
The Maserati 3500 GT Spyder, bodied by Carrozzeria Vignale, represents the most open and at the same time the most exclusive interpretation of this milestone. More elegant than the coupé yet technically identical, featuring the race-derived straight-six engines from Modena, the Vignale Spyder embodies Italian lightness, craftsmanship and timeless elegance.
The car offered here, built in November 1961 and delivered to New York in January 1962, has now completed its comprehensive, no-compromise frame-off restoration by Scuderia Azzurra. Following more than 4, 000 hours of meticulous craftsmanship, the objective of achieving a truly authentic concours condition – both mechanically and cosmetically – has been accomplished to the highest possible standards.
The timeless and highly elegant colour combination of “Azzurro Vincennes” with an interior trimmed in “Light Grey” leather perfectly complements the refined lines of the Vignale design. As a particularly rare and desirable feature, this Spyder is accompanied by its original hardtop, exactly as it could be specified when new.
Technically, the Maserati has been completely rebuilt. The engine, gearbox and the entire mechanical system have been fully overhauled and restored to concours standards. In addition, the car is equipped with numerous authentic and highly desirable details, including five new original Borrani wire wheels, a newly fabricated aluminium fuel tank, and one of the rarest period accessories available: a genuine ANSA NOS exhaust system from original old stock, an exceptionally sought-after component even during the model’s production period.
