The Ford GT40 was Henry Ford's answer to Ferrari's ********** in motorsport. Developed from the Lola Mk6 and fitted with a Ford V8 289 ci engine, the car was ready for its first race in May 1964. These early attempts were not very fruitful due to reliability issues, and Carroll Shelby was hired to organise the racing department. In February 1965, the first victory was secured and from then on the GT40 became the car to beat in all major championships. Ford won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 with the GT40, which is quite an impressive feat.
Today, the GT40 remains a trailblazer in the world of historic racing, and the car we are offering for sale is a potential winner in its class (1962-1965). Magnificently built with incredible attention to detail, it adheres to the most exacting specifications. The car features a welded steel monocoque with a welded steel roof. The front, rear, and doors are made of fibreglass, in keeping with the original GT40s that raced at Le Mans in 1965. The brakes are period Girling units. The hubs, pedal box, steering rack, gear lever and filler caps are all cast magnesium, again in line with the 1965 Le Mans specifications. The 289 ci engine was built by Knight Motorsport. Equipped with Weber 48IDA carburettors, it develops 452 bhp at 6, 400 rpm (dyno measured).
Of course, the rubber fuel tanks are FIA-homologated and are fitted inside the monocoque in conjunction with a dual-pump system. All the switches and indicator lights also conform to the original 1965 specifications. This GT40 carries an FIA HTP certificate for GTP1 valid until 31/ 12/ 2033. The GT40 has competed in a few races and has covered only 540 km since completion. The engine was fully rebuilt over the summer and this car is ready to race. Most of the parts are supplied by GT40 gurus, Gelscoe Motorsport and Kennet Persson, the Scandinavian authority on GT40s. A set of new magnesium wheels fitted with Dunlop Racing tyres is included with the car.
