Description
Classic Car Design presents this powerful Ford Mustang V8 289 coupé styled as a “racing” model. Beyond the model itself, it is the work that has been done which is impressive! Its owner, a member of the Mustang Club of France, has been driving a Mustang for many years. He has spent without counting and logged a multitude of hours to realise his dream. A file of invoices and photographs about 5 cm thick traces the restoration and preparation of the car. More than €73, 000 (seventy-three thousand) has been invested over nearly six years. Since then, the car has covered just over 2, 600 km. It benefits from an FIA/ FFSA Historic Regularity Vehicle Pass (LP VRH) in the “touring” category. It is impossible to provide an exhaustive list of everything that has been done, but here is a summary:
The base car is a 66 Californian code C model which was first registered in 1965. It was completely dismantled to work on all the sheet metal and to fit the homologated roll cage. The spectacular “Sylver blue” now covers the entire body. The yellow stripe is a nod to the famous AC Cobra 289 FIA. The front bumper has been replaced with a Shelby-type apron topped with Oscar Cibié lights.
Mechanically, everything has been redone or installed as new. The 302 cu in Ford Racing engine is fitted with ICON forged pistons and Eagle H-beam connecting rods. It is fed by a Holley 670 cfm carburettor on an Edelbrock Performer intake. It also benefits from a complete MSD ignition, an oil radiator with a Milodon high-capacity oil pan. Following the 4-into-1 collectors, the stainless steel exhaust system with side exits was customised. This engine is mated to a Toploader 4-speed gearbox which transmits power to the locked differential. There is no power assistance for steering or braking. Still rear drums, the front braking consists of 4-piston calipers and 280 mm Wilwood discs. The control is via a similar-brand pedal box. Suspension is entrusted to 4 Koni shocks. As with the Shelbys, the upper wishbone mounting points have been moved and the differential is equipped with trailing arms. The wheels are American Racing 6x15 mounted with semi-slick tyres.
Inside the cabin, the atmosphere is also sporty, although carpets and door panels are present. You can see the dashboard housing a complete Autometer instrument cluster. Everything is there to take part in regularity rallies and track sessions: Lecarra steering wheel, bucket seats, harnesses, brake balance controller, Tripmaster, fire extinguishers including one with dual interior/ exterior operation and nozzles in the cabin and engine bay, a cut-off switch… The battery sits in the boot. You also find the large-capacity tank with vertical filling.
Having had the chance to drive this beast on circuit and to co-drive on a historic rally, I can assure you that this Pony car is a weapon worthy of the Mustang myth!
