Born in the heart of an era when rallying was going through one of its most intense periods, the Talbot Samba Rallye holds a singular place in the history of competition. Far from AWD monsters with prodigious power, it embodies another facet of Group B: lightweight, agile, engaging cars designed to give drivers a direct, lively and deeply expressive machine.

The Samba Rallye is the idea of a small, unpretentious sports car capable of turning each special stage into a true exercise in precision. A compact, nerve-driven car with a fierce character, demanding commitment, pace and real driving finesse. In its Group B Evo 2 configuration, it becomes a rare piece, even more so when it has a well-documented Italian history and an interesting provenance.

The exemplar we present today stands out for a particularly strong history. First private owner since its period of operation in Italy, the vehicle appears on its Italian documents with an initial origin Autotecnica Conrero in Turin, a key name in the world of preparation and competition. Autotecnica Conrero marked the history of Italian motorsport with its know-how, its ties to competition and its ability to transform standard bases into true rally machines.

This Samba also has a direct link with Piergiorgio Deila, a renowned Italian driver, whose name appears on the Italian certificate of ownership supplied with the car. Deila would go on to achieve high-level success, including a Italian Rally Championship title in 1992, but his rallying beginnings were forged in this period, behind the wheel of small, highly formative competition cars.

According to archives, Piergiorgio Deila participated in about a dozen rallies behind the wheel of this Samba Group B between 1985 and 1987. He notably took part in prestigious events such as the Rallye Valli Vesimesi, where he finished 2nd overall and first in his class, and also, for example, the Rally Autodromo di Monza in 1985. These engagements place the car in its proper era context: Italian rallies, specialist preparers and highly focused private drivers.

Technically, this Samba Group B Evo 2 presents a particularly desirable configuration: engine rated at 139 hp, Weber 45 carburettors, 5-speed gearbox, LSD, raised sump, and braking with original twin-piston calipers. It also retains its period roll cage, its original seat, as well as its 13-inch wheels, along with four identical TRX wheels.

The condition is one of the great appeals of this car. It is impressive, but it is not a rebuilt vehicle: it is a non-restored example, still very well maintained, running perfectly and maintaining a genuine historical coherence. The various documents provided, including the original Italian registration, the FISA documents, the Peugeot identification certificate and the Italian administrative items, support the file’s interest.

Rare, documented, linked to Autotecnica Conrero and Piergiorgio Deila, this Talbot Samba Rallye Group B Evo 2 is a choice piece among automotive history.
