The History:
In 1971, the already proven BMW 2800 CS was replaced by the new 3. 0 CS and 3. 0 CSI models, fitted with an enlarged displacement of 2986 cc. Whilst the former retained carburettor-fed induction to deliver 180 bhp, the latter adopted mechanical fuel injection allowing it to reach 200 bhp.
The 3. 0 CSL (the "L" standing for leicht, meaning lightweight) used the carburettor engine of 180 bhp, like the CS, and distinguished itself with chromed wheel arches, slimmer bumpers painted in matt black and a black adhesive side stripe. The interior, with the exception of the leather and fabric sports seats and the "racing" style steering wheel, remained identical to the standard versions. However, the essential difference lay in the reduced weight thanks to the use of aluminium for the bodywork and Perspex for the windows, making the car ideal for competition.
When the CS was presented to the public, Road & Track magazine described it as "probably the most sophisticated straight-six in the world". Although it was conceived as a fast and comfortable grand tourer, the 3. 0 CSL established itself as one of the most capable racing coupés of all time. A special version of the 3. 0 CSL was homologated to compete in the European Touring Car Championship, which greatly enhanced BMW's reputation as a builder of sporting motorcars through the numerous titles won.
A total of 1, 200 examples were produced between 1971 and 1975.
