A stunning example in every way. Presented in Pimento Red with Tan interior and sitting on a fabulous set of chrome wire wheels, this gorgeous CP-code TR6 with factory Overdrive was the subject of a professional comprehensive body-off restoration around 30 years ago and slightly more recent mechanical rebuild. Since when, the car has covered just 10, 000 miles in the hands of one long-term keeper. And it drives even better than it looks. With freshly restored TR6`s breaking beyond the £30, 000 mark, this is a superb opportunity to acquire a nicely restored car at a very sensible price.
Introduced in September 1968 for the 1969 model year, Triumph`s TR6 was an open 2-seater sports car largely based on its predecessor, the TR5, featuring the same 2498cc 6-cylinder engine, chassis, manual gearbox and many body panels. Styling by Karmann of Germany resulted in a chiselled look with short Kamm-tail and a variety of options were available including a metal hardtop, overdrive, different wheels and tyres and even limited slip differential for some markets. The car was received well with almost 92, 000 units produced between 1968-76 albeit almost 90% of those built were for export, principally going to the US and Canada. Early cars relied on carburettors (CC) with more powerful petrol injection (CP) models entering production in late 1968 and running parallel on the same production line. Both carburettor and injection models remained through almost the entire build run (albeit with different codes) with power varying between 104-150 BHP.
Our car was built at the Canley plant in Coventry in August 1972 although wasn`t registered until July 1973. We know little of it`s early life but by the mid 1980`s was residing in South West Wales and from 1988-1994 was the plaything of a lady classic car enthusiast in Neath. Bills and receipts document detail work to include a new chrome bumper and new hood whilst MoT Certificates from the period confirm that the Triumph was used and evidently enjoyed. In November 1994 and after a short period of storage, the car was sold for £2500 to a gentleman near Stockbridge, Hampshire who, having paid for the car to be collected, recognised that he`d rather taken on quite a project. Barely running, it was obvious that the Triumph was in need of considerable attention. He obtained several quotes at the time from marque specialists but ultimately went with a local company, Classic Car Restorations and Repairs of Lopcombe Corner near Salisbury. During the Summer of 1995, the car body was removed from the chassis, itself restored with new outriggers, whilst the body was rebuilt with many new panels to include inner and outer sills, rear wings, front inner wings, door skins, floors and new body mounting brackets. With the rebuilt body back in place, the whole of the underside was Waxoiled and the car completely repainted in its original Pimento Red. Almost 100 colour photographs document the condition of the car prior to the work, the work in progress and the finished result. Back on the road and running, it was soon evident that some serious mechanical work was required and just 3 years later, our keeper treated the Triumph to a full engine rebuild with all new ancillaries. This included a rebore to plus 0. 20, a balanced crankshaft, a lead-free cylinder head, timing chain, all new core plug seals, plugs and gaskets, a Bosch fuel pump conversion, new clutch, oil pump and alternator. Since the rebuild, the car has covered around 10, 000 miles. In the late 1990`s, the restoration was complete with all-new Tan interior to include seat frames and covers and new Honey carpets throughout. After some 32 years of ownership, the car was put up for sale and we were very lucky to have the chance of acquiring it. We have just completed an on-ramp health check, detail clean and can confirm that the Triumph is on the button and sounding fabulous.
The car today presents just as can be seen in the photographs. It is an older restoration but a professional one and still displays great panel gaps and a superb paint finish. Just one or two very minor stone chips and blemishes reflect that some 30 years has gone by since the work was done but it is still a sharp looking car. Other than a little pitting to the original front chrome bumper, all other chrome-work is excellent as the Black hood (which incidentally is the quickest and easiest TR hood I have ever come across to operate!). The cabin too is excellent with the replaced Tan trim still looking fresh alongside paler Honey carpets, a very nice wooden dashboard and later Moto-lita wood-rimmed steering wheel. Turn the key and with a little choke the 6-cylinder barks immediately into life sounding purposeful through the twin-pipe exhaust system. On the road, the Triumph is nothing short of sensational. It pulls strongly through the gears with smooth yet instant selection, whilst feeling beautifully balanced into the corners with positive steering, great brakes and of course, there`s that exhaust note. Having driven many TR6`s over the years, I have always found them to be a bit of a handful. And not always in a good way! This one is different. There is almost a delicacy about it. It feels so well-sorted which is perhaps a reflection of the quality of restoration and long-term ownership since. I was very impressed.
Our car comes with a considerable history file going back to the late 1980`s to include some early invoices, considerable paperwork documenting the bodywork restoration in 1995 and the engine rebuild in 1998, numerous other invoices from the period, almost 100 colour photographs, an extensive MoT trail with Certificates from 1988 to 2018, a Valuation Certificate from 2015 in the sum of £13, 500, old Registration documents and a current V5C. Registered Historic, the Triumph is naturally both MoT and road tax exempt.
A fabulous example of an iconic British sportscar. Great value too.
