Here for sale is my much loved Mini 1275GT reluctant sale due to change in circumstances.
The car was originally purchased by my grandmother in 1975 used as a daily commute (See the photo attached of her back in 1975 and the photo taken earlier today). Following my grandparents divorce the car passed to my grandfather in 1984. The car was used as a daily commuter until he stopped driving cars in 1989. It was parked under a tarpaulin/ Car Port from that time until he passed away and I inherited the car in 2005.
Since then the car has had lots of money spent on it and treated as a very slow project. The original Denovo wheels rusted during its very long SORN period and the run flat cannisters inside the wheels set the tires square. I have since sourced identical wheels and tires (Denovo Dunlop) although these are not suitable for road driving as they are so old but great for shows. It currently sits on 12” Alloy wheels Falken tyres & plenty of tread (Have covered 100 miles maybe)
Body
The front of the car is new (Excluding inner wings) all the way back to and including A Panels (All British Motor Heritage panels) except the bonnet which is original. Scuttle panels were renewed and the area around the interior air vents which had rusted. The rest of the shell is very sound as the car has only been used by me very little and only in summer away from rain. Underside is perfectly sound having been protected before it was stored in 1989. No rust.
The car was resprayed in the original colour (Teal Blue I believe). It has been kept wherever possible original. During the new front end the aerial was not reattached to the wing. I do have a new 1275GT badge somewhere for the back, as the original one has been bleached by the sun so will try to put this on when I get chance.
Engine
Converted to Unleaded by Halesowen Engines so no messing around with additives. The engine has been rebuilt with new Piston Rings (The original ones seemed not to be from a mini though the guys in mini spares thought this was a common occurrence in the 70s where anything on the shelf would do). Bores hones but not resized so still 1275. New Oil seals, All new gasket sets, New Duplex Timing chain, New Clutch, New Brake/ Clutch Master / Slave cylinder. All new brake pipes. New Lucas Brake callipers at the front and new at the back. The exhaust is new old stock and painted before installing (Original). Everything was purchased original where possible from Mini Spares and I have a very thick pile of receipts. The car was set up at Aldon Engineering in Brierley Hill on their rolling road so runs sweet as a nut. To be honest this has barely been run in since the rebuild. The petrol tank is not the original one as this was so badly rusted. New fuel sender unit. Everything has been rebuilt / Renewed.
Interior
Not done much to this. The original carpet disintegrated so purchased standard black. The original one was the same colour as the seats but decided to go with black. Everything else is original and not messed with.
Bad points
Interior needs attention at the moment. In particular the headlining is the original and the adhesive seems to have leached through over the years so this could do with changing. Had a quote for £275 if I don’t do this myself before selling.
The Tacho does not work, apparently this stopped working in the 80's. This did not affect MOT. I am trying to sort this at the moment but do not get much time outside of work. The car had done 47, 230 miles before engine out/ re spray. A few years ago and has covered certainly no more than 100 miles since then. No Sound Proofing has been installed in the engine bay so cabin is noisy.
This is a very original car, unmolested. Passed MOT in August. Now TAX exempt. Dirt cheap to insure. You can spend a lot of money buying a really expensive car but don’t get anywhere near the attention you do driving this. At time of writing there are 73 Austin Mini 1275gt registered with DVLA, 131 Austin Morris Mini 1275GT, 80 Leyland Cars Mini 1275GT and 56 Morris Mini 1275GT. Increasingly rare and sought after.
