Description
Well, what a find I have on offer here! A 1969 Ford Escort Mark 1 (yes, a Mark 1) estate in Aquatic Jade Metallic. Briefly, first of all, she is an H reg early model with early spec interior with that delightful 60s steering wheel. She has covered just 59, 000 miles from new (guaranteed), she spent 35 years with the same family, she has a current MoT until April 2019, she is delightfully original, she is not a "restored" example, she drives superbly and she is as rare as hens' teeth!
Oh my. I am running out of words now! Well, rarity is everything here and my word does she really look the part. Look how well she sits, think about the sheltered life she has led and the many spells of time she has been tucked away into hibernation. For example, in the past 40 years alone, she has covered a mere 9, 000 miles. Yes, you read that correctly!
A total gem. She is not "immaculate" or "mint" or any of the other "cobblers" some people tend to use in their descriptions. She is original, honest, one hell of a rare survivor and actually a delightful, as well as practical, classic estate. There's a couple of small cosmetic areas here and there that might benefit from some weekend attention but I consider them to be minor in the grand scheme of things and also while taken into context that this is an up and running low mileage car with detailed history and a current MoT. The bottoms of the A posts - mainly the nearside - could benefit from some improvement and the nearside has a small black area where a repair has been made. There are two repair panels for these areas included in the boot, purchased from Magnum Panels Supplies in Lincoln. However I am not so sure that they are actually needed. I thought that the carpets were original - bearing in mind the low mileage - but Martin Lunn who sold the Escort to the chap in Scotland from whom I acquired it informs me that they were replacements - and the most expensive on the market! Thanks for the info Martin, much appreciated.
Her 1100 engine is so sweet and she is a total joy.
The rest is down to you. Go find another!
All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is almost 50-years-old. They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind. Most examples have clearly had work over the decades and I cannot predict how much or how little they will need in the future. That, I am afraid, is the nature of the beast in the world of classic cars. Motoring antiques is what they are. I love my Georgian dining table, but I can see all the scars and signs of previous woodworm. Had I wanted a brand new table, I would have gone to Oak Furniture Land. Well perhaps. Demand is outstripping supply these days and they don't make the old girls any more. So, make some allowances and drive away with a smile on your face. It goes with the territory, and therefore must be accepted, that they are always going to need on-going care, attention and repair. Don't tell me some way down the line that the full beam doesn't work or that you have discovered something I knew nothing about. They are bloody old. It happens. They come in and they go out. It seems as though I have become a "re-homer" of classic cars.
