Thinking of seeing a few countries or road tripping / House hunting in Europe this summer? Somewhere to stay while your renovating that barn of your dreams Or just always had that travel bug bt do not need a huge plastic camper with showers and toilets to clean just like at home !
There is no finer way to experience a bit of freedom than a T4 ‘cali’ rare enough that they come up on ebay here we have a special example, Delivered New on 24-03-1997 to KONRAD VW Autohaus Brushel Germany who still exist to this day . only 2 previous owners, the first having owned it until 2012. Good clean honest pop top t4, every old TUV cert from new, every oil change paperwork, original handbooks etc.
This is a totally unmodified example – a facelift t4 cali is one of the most sought after vehicles on the road - and with that they are saught after and expensive in every country – Frankly when you want to just know it will start – and know it will get you there there’s few vehicles on the planet like a 5cyl T4 2. 5 Tdi.
The T3 is cute and Comfy- but in original guise heavy old and slow –( and im not saying thats a bad thing ) The T5 is unreliable when it begins… Waterpump-Turbo- Differntial -DMF-Camshaft- Elec roof control… etc add to that flimsy interior build quality- slow electric roof- barely enough fresh water storage to make 3 cups of tea at best !
Bref- they all have their Plus and minus points.
After owning them all - were always back to the T4 tdi , parts are cheap, its built tough and everything works 20 years on – and in another 20 years probably will too, it does 1300KM to the tank.. They will probably have filters in stock and be able to work on it – even in back end of the North pole.. A phase 2 T4 hides its age well , they are clean cut but not Flash - which won't impress the neighbours but means your wheels will still be there when you come back from a mountain trek , Those briars that scratch down the narrow Portugal lanes… and the kids sandy feet all over the place - will hurt a lot less in the T4 than in your 50K Vw t5 or T6 !
That said lets look at the van, 1997, full history with all the original service books handbooks , gas certs etc, its been very well minded , no accident damage or butchery , never been lowered or worn any big Chinese alloy wheels - here you can mow along at 140KMH for 10 Hours and arrive fresh, comfortable as sitting in your grandads favorite chair with the arm rests adjusted nice and comfortable, no vibrations or suspension knocks, all is tight. sleeps 4 people, with ease.
Interior is unmarked and unstained, curtains clean and taunt. No signs of excessive wear to be signaled anywhere really, considering its been to the moon and back – ( PS if you find a T4 under 300K Km be very suspicious ) many have been clocked,
Full Westfalia Werke original fit out – All usual comforts.
Freezer/ Fridge- webasto night heater- fluorescent tube lighting , twin hob gas cooker, sink with ‘douchette’ lets you get shower out the side window.
Double glazed windows, Rock and roll downstairs bed, twin bed in the pop top with reading light, block our curtains all around including windscreen, Wardrobe storage- fold away table , good 50L water reservoir,( lasts for days) , lockable safe with 2 keys. Hard flooring, seat rails, rotating front seats, decent cuppoards and cutlery drawer, second leisure battery . Electrical power point outside for camp site hook up , invertor that charges the battery – working , quality Grundig Usb radio with original multispeakers and telephone/ ipod hook up . 4 seats with belts in total. 5 seater logbook- rare) central locking, ( easy to make remote central locking )
Being the facelift model we have the modern looking long nose front. Also the poptop has side windows both left and right as opposed to one front zipper, driver and passenger airbags, Cactus design interior cloth. The webasto night heater is now under the floor and ducted into the living area- making for a quiet night, early ones used to make a lot of racket . Front fog lights, new shape bumpers. ABS brakes with discs all round , a second diesel 'zuheiser' to warm the engine quicker when its under zero degrees
Captains chairs- armrests left and right. Cruise control can be added -its as simple as buying a Cruise indicator stalk on ebay or retrofitting with push buttons - info all over the forums.
Electric wondows, central locking , electric mirrors, power steering, rev counter night heat and fridge controls on roof mounted LCD panel as well as outside temp/ battery voltage and reserve water level.
Braderup extras- 'Top rail' fitted – allows an awning to be fitted or a Fiamma awning or drive away tent . Lovely and neat looks factory and there not cheap. Front luxury bradrup fitted floor mats, and some bradrup storage pockets in the back .
The 102 is the perfect engine for the weight- many a German T4 Taxi has done well over the million Kms on the original engine not even a head gasket. one can go from the Uk to Spain without a fill up. This van is standard to my knowledge but for some reason it’s very fast, certainly the most grunt of any t4 I have driven, feels similar to a T5 130. Im not sure why – but its nice. you can sit at 140 kmh / 80Mph with ease.
Timing belt’s/ water pump have been done with a good quality continental full kit
Front suspension balljoints are done as are brake hoses etc
Full service done including all filters,
New battery – rear brake pads front flexi hoses
Wears 4 x Good year quality tyres all at about 50%
Just past the stricter new EU standard French Controle technique flying colours so road legal until 2021. Any distance no problem.
Defaults not a lot to say here. Its travelled and its lived so expect some light wear and tear / some touchups stone chips, the tent has a small patch where they always get pinched by the hinge ( this can happen in first week of ownership)
Leisure battery is good . I have just filled the camping gaz bottle which will easilly do a year. (no contract to pay )
If someone took half the kms off this van you wouldn’t doubt that it was genuine. French professional dealers sell these buses for 25k eur when silly season comes – as in now onwards. I have a bit to much stock at present so recently sold a couple of T3 and another T4 ,
This is the sort of van that would never normally see the open market- but i dont do any VW forums so its up for anyone to buy .
In a nutshell rare chance to own the real thing, your wife will say your mad spending that money on an old 97 – but guarantee she will love it, once owned –forever hooked. High up seating king of the road position . sneak under all the 2 metre barriers to the bests forest camp spots and quiet beaches.. car price toll roads and ferries, easy park in town - no longer than a big car , car like fuel running costs. Fridge cools the Beers for the summer Beach evenings, night heater keeps you snug up in the Winter snow.
in a world of T4s this is a good find. Priced to sell. Just register it on NOVA upon entry to uk and you can insure it and use it from there.
You cannot really get the same level of quality with a home camper build in the back of some old van . These are time tested. if anything the good examples go up another couple of grand every year as the new ones get more bling and fragile.
Similar vehicle to - marco Polo , Nugget , Devon , Caravelle , Multivan , James cook, Bongo . There is only so much i can fit into 12 photos but hopefully it does the condition justice.
