1927 AUSTIN 7 Rtype TOP HAT SALOON
Very rare, Top-hat model in dark blue with black mudguards, roof and dark blue trim. Covered a believed 44000 miles in its lifetime (approx 4130 miles since resto), 7 previous keepers, last two keepers from Isle of Wight. Registered in Dec 1927, 92 years old and cost a staggering £150 when new. Full ground up resto in excellent condition and transferable valuable original reg number VB1350. 7 Rtypes were a saloon version of the Chummy and the first Austin 7 saloon built entirely by Austin. Designed to carry 4 adults with luggage, max speed 50mph and fuel consumption 45mpg. Named the Top Hat because men at that time could comfortably sit in such a car wearing their top hats – borne out by an article that tells us that J. P. Morgan ordered his limousine in the early 1900s with an especially high roof so he could ride around without taking his hat off. This car latterly belonged to an avid car collector and has been in his collection for many years.
Features: brass tail lights, handles and door hinges, under bonnet fittings, outside klaxon, under bonnet klaxon, king of the road scuttle lights, opening windscreen, doorsteps, sliding front and rear windows, s/ steel map light, ashtray, flower holders, outside mirror, outside Pratts petrol tank, starting handle, original AA brass badge, Owners club London badge, winged outside temp gauge, colour coded Austin 7 picnic hamper, original hand painted number plates. VSCC eligibility doc stating engine crank case, gearbox casing, axle casing, front axle and chassis are all original and standard, car registration, chassis and engine numbers, cc and body type are all correct. The bore is stated 56mm, stroke 76mm, top gear ratio 4. 89, 3 forward gears, one reverse, coil conversion and the original magneto.
