Description

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 3 in Mid Grey (1979).

Petrol 2286cc. MOT Exempt. Tax Exempt. Recently rebuilt onto a Galvanised Chassis. Reconditioned Engine & Gearbox. Large History File of Receipts for works completed. Safari Roof. 7 Seater. Station Wagon Configuration. Parabolic Springs. Weber Carburettor.

We are delighted to present for sale this recently rebuilt Series 3 Land Rover®, in rarely seen Mid-Grey colour scheme with Safari Roof. We purchased this vehicle from the current owner who had recently finished the restoration – but had been forced to sell due to a COVID-19 related redundancy.

Externally, this Series 3 is presented as a 7 seater station wagon, with glass side windows, safari roof and alpine lights. The vehicle has been rebuilt retaining the original galvanised cappings and a new galvanised front bumper has been fitted to maintain that sharp appearance. The recently fitted galvanised chassis is clearly visible to the rear, and is dressed with useful rear grabhandles and a towbar with remote electrics. A pair of working LED rear spots are fitted (useful for dark nights!) and the vehicle also enjoys a pair of vintage numberplates too. The bodywork is in good order and the sprayed paint finish is of a good standard. A bonnet mounted spare and defender-mounted wing-mirrors complete the look.

The interior is fitted with 3 deluxe seats to the front, with deluxe matting in the footwells, and matching rear benches to afford seating for seven occupants including the driver. A rear load mat is also fitted. There is an airy feel to the cabin thanks to the side windows and alpine lights – the roof has been neatly re-trimmed for sound deadening too. The dash, as shown in the pictures, survives in good order also.

Where this Series 3 stands out over other previously rebuilt vehicles is the recent nature of the rebuild – the underside of the vehicle still retains the cleanliness and crispness associated with a much more expensive vehicle and we have included photographs of the engine bay and underside to demonstrate just how clean and recent this rebuild has been. There are also images of the rebuild itself (when completed) included within the advert to show the high-standard of works completed. Mechanically, there has been a host of new parts fitted (a small portion of the list is below):

New galvanised chassis
Newly rebuilt axles
New parabolic springs
New swivels
New brakes (shoes, cylinders, pipes, servo and slave/ master cylinder)
New propshafts
New steering balljoints and relay
New Weber carburettor
New water pump
New ignition system (coil, points, distributor, spark plugs, leads)
New seats
New doors
Engine work – new gaskets, new head gasket, new valves
Reconditioned Gearbox with new synchromesh
Out on the road, this Series 3 drives as well as any period engined vehicle we have had. The ride is much improved and is far more compliant than standard thanks to the new parabolic springs and the engine is keen and the exhaust gives a nice tone thanks to the Weber carburettor affording more power than standard. The reconditioned gearbox feels tight and is a pleasure to use. It starts with the first turn of the key and stops well too thanks to a renewed braking system.

In summary, if you are looking for a recently rebuilt Series Land Rover® that can take the whole family, then this could be for you. With MOT and Tax Exemption and classic insurance, it should prove to be cheap to run, and with the rebuild, should also last the test of time. We believe this vehicle is superb value for money – at around 50% of the asking price of a brand new rebuild through us of the same specification, with a 12 month plus wait. Whereas, you can buy this today and it is ready to be enjoyed and immediately delivered. If you are keen, be quick – we don’t think this will last long!
