Description
A very rare opportunity to own a very unique car.
Hillman began manufacturing this car before the outbreak of World War One. Production was abruptly halted so the factory could manufacture munitions, during this time the engine and chassis were placed aside. When World War One ended, Hillman used up there stock of pre First World War running gear, engines and parts to produce their latest model. Electric C. A. V lights were fitted as opposed to carbide. The car is known as the P-Type meaning Peace model. UK registration number BY3898. The car is currently registered as a 1921 model but evidence suggests it is indeed earlier adding to the cars intriguing history.
The car spent many years languishing in Lord Montague’s private collection and was later displayed at the then newly opened Beaulieu Motor Museum. Many photos and souvenirs survive of this Hillman on display and they can still be found today such as; cigarette cards, post cards and key rings. It is believed the car was treated to a respray, a maroon body with black wings, during its time at Beaulieu.
This car was also publicised in G. N. Georgano’s Vintage Cars 1886 to 1930. Some years after the car’s life at Beaulieu, the car was owned by vintage car enthusiasts in Guernsey where it was regularly driven to various vintage car meets and joined the Tour de Bretagne.
I acquired the car and recommissioned it and continue to use the car, taking it to local meetings and displays.
The engine, a 4 cylinder 10HP, runs well without fault and starts on the handle with ease. The engine was rebuilt 4 years ago, new white metal bearings were manufactured. The oil pump has also been rebuilt.
The car comes with a large history file.
The body is in good condition but still retains its originality. This car has to be seen to appreciate its true character and charm.
The car is currently in Guernsey, Channel Islands with regular ferries to Portsmouth UK and St Malo, France.
