Highly Desirable First Year Unrestricted Hayabusa.
Launched in 1999, the Hayabusa shocked the motorcycle world by delivering a whole new level of speed, power and overall performance. It instantly gained the title of the world’s fastest production motorcycle. But the motorcycle industry’s adoption of a self-imposed speed limit soon put an end to the era of top-speed wars, leaving the unrestricted 1999 Hayabusa secure as the fastest standard production bike of the 20th century. Although the Hayabusa continues today as a third generation, the first edition is the one most sought after by collectors.
Hayabusa, Japanese for Peregrine Falcone, was chosen because it was the fastest bird of any kind and preyed on blackbirds, a metaphor for the Hayabusa unseating Honda’s Blackbird as the world’s fastest motorcycle. The first generation Hayabusa was powered by a 81x63mm double overhead camshaft, 16-valve liquid-cooled, inline four that displaced 1, 299cc. At the time this was the largest displacement production sporting motorcycle. Keihin/ Denso fuel injection and a ram air induction system contributed to a then record 173 horsepower. The engine featured a gear-driven balance shaft to reduce vibration, and allowed it to be solidly mounted in the conventional twin beam frame. Suspension included a fully adjustable upside-down front fork and an adjustable single shock linkage rear unit and twin six-piston Tokico front brake calipers gripped on a pair of 320mm discs. The claimed dry weight was surprisingly light, at 215kg. The ram air ducts at the front of the rounded nose and the requirement for minimal frontal area required a controversial stacked headlight. The bulbous bodywork may have came in for criticism but the original Hayabusa was much more than the sum of its parts. The abundant power offered a wider range of gear selection options for any given speed, and this ultimately delivered a more controllable and pleasurable ride. Aerodynamic styling that instilled the Hayabusa with one of the lowest drag coefficients achieved on a production motorcycle not only contributed to controllability, stability and rider comfort, its striking unique bodywork and styling design contributed in achieving the Hayabusa’s iconic presence.
The 1999 Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa offered here is mechanically sound and in very good condition. Apart from a few scratches there is no visible damage. It is fitted with aftermarket Wyvern carbon-fibre mufflers but is supplied with the original mufflers and pillion seat. This first year Japan import is in original colours and comes with full ADR compliance.
The unrestricted 340 km/ h speedometer reads 47, 819km.
