his Type 546 engine was originally produced in 1953 for use in a “Pre-A” Porsche 356. It was installed in a 1955 356 that was acquired by a classic cars collector 50 years ago, before being removed from that car and disassembled. The 1. 5L flat-four features a two-piece case that is fitted with cylinders, heads, and valve covers. Removed components that come with the engine include a crankshaft, connecting rods, a camshaft, and a distributor. Carburetors and intake manifolds are also included, along with an oil cooler, engine tin, and two fan shrouds. This 356 engine now offered.
The Type 546 is an air-cooled flat-four that had a bore of 80mm and a stroke of 74mm from the factory, for a displacement of 1, 488cc. It features a two-piece crankcase, and the cylinders are separate components that can be removed individually.
The engine was disassembled by the seller in 1970, and parts accompanying the sale include a roller bearing crankshaft, connecting rods, a camshaft, and pushrods. The cam gear is missing.
Valve covers are also included along with valvetrain components. Other parts include an oil pump, oil cooler, Bosch distributor, and a damaged front pulley. The included generator is missing its fan.
Two mismatched carburetors come with the engine and are shown above, including a Solex 32 PBJ unit. Intake manifolds and two Knecht air filters are also included.
Retained engine tin does not include the rear muffler cover. An extra fan housing accompanies the sale, as shown in the gallery.
